Anton Webern: 6 Bagatelles op.9 for string quartet

Arnold Schoenberg: String Quartet no.2 op.10 in F-sharp minor

Anton Webern: 3 unpublished Bagatelles MS174 for string quartet and voice

Alban Berg: Lyric Suite, first version with voice on a poem by Charles Baudelaire

Directed by Michel Swierczewski

Duration: 74.16

Filmed at the 11th ProQuartet Musical Encounters, this concert introduces us to Webern's 3 unpublished Bagatelles MS174, a work at the limit of silence, and the version with voice of Berg's Lyric Suite, discovered after the death of Helene Berg - an immense cry of love and despair when the composer realized that his adulterous relationship with Hanna Fuchs was doomed to failure. A masterwork of the 20th century, Schoenberg's second string quartet marks the break with tonality, perhaps linked to the suicide of the painter Richard Gerstl, his friend, and Mathilde Schoenberg's lover.

This film will be introduced by a documentary filmed in Grenoble during the Diotima's recording sessions for their CD dedicated to the Second Viennese School. The film alternate excerpts and interviews with the quartet members and soloists Marie-Nicole Lemieux and Sandrine Piau. On top, some archival films show Schoenberg and Rudolf Kolish. An essential listening key before seing the concert.
